Pilot 1

In 2023, Bon Volks collaborated with Turner Contemporary and The Studio Workshop to deconstruct and redistribute a large exhibition wall from the Sonya Boyce exhibition.

THE PROCESS

The wall construction was designed by The Studio Workshop to be made in such a way that deconstruction was straight forward. Once deconstructed, the components were made available to local organisations through an Open Call, for projects that would exhibit community benefit.

This Pilot became Circular Margate's inaugural project, aiming to tackle the material waste endemic to large cultural organisations like Turner Contemporary.

These institutions typically host three to four major exhibitions annually, each with unique material needs. A gallery might be completely rebuilt for one exhibition, only to be dismantled three months later for the next. This rapid turnover, coupled with limited storage capacity, often leads to significant material disposal, despite a desire to mitigate this: informal networks for material distribution exist adjacent to these institutions, but their effectiveness is limited by time constraints and the casual nature of these arrangements.
