Workshop

2025

In April and March 2025, funded by The UK Shared Prosperity Fund, we prototyped a core facet of the proposed Margate Materials Hub - using waste materials to promote skills and training.

We delivered 4 workshops, using materials donated by Turner Contemporary, which focussed on developing simple hand tool skills. Local cabinet maker Alan Love led the workshops, where the participants learnt chisel skills to make a jointed footstool/ low table.

These two day courses allowed participants, who had a range of previous experience, to hone carpentry skills and build confidence working with reclaimed materials. The workshops also gave everyone a chance to chat about sustainable making, the importance of hands-on skills, and how these kinds of projects could lead to jobs or further training in creative and construction industries.

The workshops demonstrated the potential of using waste streams as a platform for both creative engagement and practical skills development — a core ambition of the Materials Hub
