Materials

WHAT MATERIALS DO WE COLLECT AND WHERE FROM?

So far…it’s a lot of wood! Because of our background in carpentry and construction, we have found ourselves with a lot of the stuff. Which is great, as wood is easy to handle and make into all the things that our community needs. However, we are open to all material waste flows and we aim to be recovering all sorts of things when we get into our Materials Hub.

Initially, these materials were supplied by waste from the creative sector, but we have now started to intervene in waste flows that come from the construction sector.

Our focus will always be on intervening in waste streams within commercial organisations, as opposed to domestic waste. This is because the volumes of material we can redirect from commercial sources are significantly greater than those from domestic retrofits or projects, leading to a much larger environmental and social impact.

For instance, In Pilot 1 and Pilot 2 we recovered 2.66 tonnes of construction material from three Turner Contemporary exhibitions; ‘Sonia Boyce: Feeling her way’, ‘Beyond Form’ and ‘Anya Gallaccio: Preserve”.

We have so far distributed 1.3 tonnes of this material to local community projects, benefiting 9 local organisations.
