Material
hub

Circular Margate aims to establish a Margate Materials Hub by 2027.

This will be a large, dedicated premises serving as a central collection, sorting, and processing point for a wide range of waste streams across Margate and Thanet.

Futhermore, the Hub will be the foundation for delivering the core aim of Circular Margate: to reimagine waste as a social asset. Through the redistribution and creative reuse of materials, the site will support education, hands-on skills development, and pathways into employment.

It will be a place where the value of the social will be held above the value of commerce.

What is a materials hub?
Material waste streams are too often destined for landfill or incineration, not because they lack value, but because viable alternatives simply don’t exist.
A Materials Hub acts as a strategic intervention in this system – intercepting waste before it is destroyed and redirecting it back into productive use. By retaining materials at their highest possible value for as long as possible, the Hub aligns with core circular economy principles, turning a linear waste pathway into a regenerative, resourceful loop
One problem to be solved with material waste flows is the space they take up. The hub intervenes and allows these materials to rest, whilst a considered onward use is created.

Why Margate?
Spatially, Margate is a good size to prototype a materials hub. Due to moving the materials short distances, you do not negate the carbon benefit of retaining the materials in use with high transport emissions.
Margate, like many others, is a town where many small organisations are trying to have a community impact, whilst operating on very little money. It is also a town that is experiencing a boom in construction and the explosion of regeneration, led by the arts. If those sectors can be tapped into for material waste, then we help benefit those individuals and organisations who are often not feeling the benefits of the successes of these sectors.

What will be inside?
Processing
Materials will be received and processed ready for their distribution as raw materials, or be turned into components for products and projects that the community has requested.
Education
We are running out of time to implement systems that will turn the tanker of environmental catastrophe - we need hope and imagination. Education in our hub will acatalyse a generation to adapt their relationship with materials from consumer to steward.
Skills
To shape a world that is more equitable and sustainable, we need people with the skills. The hub will use material reuse to teach practical skills in construction, making and repair.
